How to Choose Brand Values That Actually Mean Something: 150+ Brand Value Ideas

Brand Values List: 150+ Ideas for Your Business

If you have ever been asked to list your brand values and immediately drawn a blank, you are not alone.

Most business owners know what matters to them. Putting it into a few clear words is the hard part. That is where this guide comes in.

Use the list below as a starting point as you define or revisit your brand. Notice which words feel true to the way you already run your business, serve your customers, and make decisions. You do not need to choose the most impressive-sounding values. You need to choose the most honest ones.

First, what are brand values?

Brand values are the core beliefs that guide how your business operates. They shape the decisions you make, the experience you create, the people you want to work with, and the way your brand shows up in the world.

They are not just words that live on an About page. Strong values should be visible in the way you price, communicate, design, hire, solve problems, and care for your clients.

For example, a brand that values clarity might use straightforward pricing and plain language. A brand that values adventure might encourage its customers to try something new. A brand that values craftsmanship might choose slower production methods and pay close attention to every detail.

How to choose your brand values

Start by choosing five to ten words that catch your attention. Then narrow that list to three to five core values by asking:

  • Is this already true of my business, or is it only something I aspire to?

  • Does this influence how I make decisions?

  • Can I give a real example of this value in action?

  • Would I protect this value even if doing so took more time or cost more money?

  • Does it help distinguish the experience I offer?

  • Is another word on my list saying nearly the same thing?

There are no universally “right” values. The goal is to identify the beliefs that are both meaningful to you and relevant to the people you serve.

Go beyond the single word

A value becomes useful when you define what it means to your brand. Two businesses can both value quality while putting it into practice in completely different ways.

Once you have narrowed down your choices, complete this sentence for each one:

We value [value], which means we [specific belief, behavior, or commitment].

Here are a few examples:

  • Clarity: We make complex decisions easier with thoughtful strategy and straightforward communication.

  • Hospitality: We want every interaction to feel generous, personal, and genuinely welcoming.

  • Originality: We create work with a clear point of view instead of following whatever is trending.

  • Adventure: We make room for curiosity, bold ideas, and a willingness to take the less obvious path.

  • Craftsmanship: We care about the details because the details shape the whole experience.

Try to avoid definitions that could belong to almost any business. “We value integrity because we always do the right thing” may be true, but it does not tell us much about your brand. What does doing the right thing look like in your process, policies, or client experience?

A quick values exercise

If you are still stuck, think about these questions:

  1. What are you unwilling to compromise on?

  2. What do your favorite clients appreciate most about working with you?

  3. What frustrates you about the typical way things are done in your industry?

  4. What do you want people to feel when they interact with your brand?

  5. What do you want your business to be known for beyond what you sell?

  6. Which decisions have made you especially proud of your business?

Your answers will often reveal stronger values than choosing words from a list alone.

Put your values to the test

Choose three to five values and write a short explanation for each one. If two values lead to the same explanation, combine them or choose the stronger word.

The final test: your values should sound like your business, help guide a real decision, and show up in the experience you create. If they can do all three, you are on the right track.

Defining your values is one part of building a brand that feels clear, cohesive, and true to your business. If you are ready to bring that bigger picture together, let’s map out your next move.
